How students can get involved...

If you would like to participate, we will be leaving Greenwood Elementary School every day at around 6:40 a.m. and then arriving at the High School at around 7:15 a.m. and will be walking on the sidewalk of CR 101/Peony Lane. In regards to after school, there will be a group meeting at the athletic entrance at around 2:30 p.m. to head back, but with all of the extra-curriculars that students are involved in after school, it will be less of an organized effort. There will be free hot apple cider offered before we head out on our walk in the mornings, so you should definitely come and support the cause on any of the school days during the month of December and bring a friend while you are at it.

  1. This is fantastic. The power of youth to take issue with the world around them and to effectively implement change is wonderfully to watch. One note of warning remember to also look in your own back yard for problems. Often times with service learning projects we look to other "third world countries" to become saviors. There are numberous issues in North Minneapolis and East St. Paul that could give you a hands experience with issues of poverty, homelessness, and healthcare. Remember to work with a community not for a community. Place emphasis that this is a partnership. Also work for change not charity. What ways could you try to not perpetuate the problems that exist in the phillipines but make systems that will support people long after this project? Not diminishing anything you are trying to do. We as a society just continually push for progress in regards to basic human dignity. Keep up the fantastic work.

  4. I read an article about you guys in the Star Tribune and I was inspired. The article said that this was an offshoot of an organization called Y.E.S. I am a student at MGSH, and I have been wanting to start a similar group there for awhile. Can you give me any hints about how to do so, where to find projects to become involved in, and any other helpful information? Thank you for your time. Keep up the great work, your an inspiration! (wish I could have walked :)

  5. Hey thanks a lot. In regards to Y.E.S., it is a volunteer group run by a wonderful teacher named Mary Kay Williams and I think that she would be the most helpful in answering any kind of questions about starting a group similar to this at your school. Her email address is
"MaryKay.Williams@wayzata.k12.mn.us" and I think that if you just shoot her an email with your questions, she would be more than willing to answer them. Thanks again and sorry for the late response.
